The story of Sade, a beautiful 24 year
old African-American woman on a spiritual quest, searching for her lost father,
professor Ajayi Esan, who was compelled to leave her and her American mother
22 years earlier in New York, Back to Africa is a
full length feature film of epic proportions shot wholly in Africa by continental
Africans and African-Americans.
Sade’s spiritual quest leads her to Nigeria- the most
populous Black nation in the World - and takes her from the bustling Lagos metropolis,
plunging her deep into the Nigerian hinterland- Oshogbo, Ekiti, Idanre and Ife-
the cradle of Yoruba culture and tradition, where Sade finds herself, her Roots
and her culture.
Back to Africa delves deep into never
before revealed exposes on African understandings, Spirituality and Culture.
We witness an interethnic Yoruba and Igbo wedding lush with cultural splendour,
a spectacular kingship festival, breathtaking landscape with rolling mountains
jutting-up like ramparts and more importantly, the spiritual transformation
of the main protagonist as she blossoms into the very essence of the African
personality.
Back to Africa was Written, Directed
and Produced by Tony Abulu, a veteran propagator of African culture worldwide.
He is the Publisher/Editor of the world acclaimed Black ivory magazines and
has produced films and world tours of cultural troupes such as The National
Troupe of Nigeria and has organized numerous seminars on business opportunities
in Africa and the Diaspora.
Back to Africa stars the talented
African-American actress Ella Asaad who was joined by prolific African-American
filmmaker Ferman lee who served as Director of Photography. Mr. Lee, a 25-year
veteran of filmmaking industry had previously served a 35mm cinematographer
for FESTAC ’77- The Historic, Second World Black and African Festival
of Arts and Culture held in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977. He also worked on another
Nigerian feature film “Eye of Life.”
The captivating Back to Africa Music
was scored by Nigerian born Berkelee College of Music graduate Wole Alade, regarded
as one of the best African contemporary composers. Supporting music was provided
by late legendary Afro-beat king Fela Anikulopo Kuti, “Juju superstar”
Sir Sina Peters and “Igbo Rhythms Maestro” Sir, Stephen Osita Osadebe.
Back to Africa features a cast of
over 350 actors and extras including some of Africa’s most respected actors,
such as: Wole Amele, Jab Adu, Toun Oni and Jimmy Johnson.
